Whether to replace your heating and air conditioning system or fix it – this is also often a question we ask ourselves when it comes time to our car needing repairs. However, this question is often overlooked when it comes to major home appliances, such as our HVAC system. Next time you’re at a crossroads deciding whether or not now is the time to bite the bullet and replace your HVAC system, here are some things to consider.
1. Age of Your System
Older systems have parts that are sometimes hard to find, and therefore cost more to locate and install. Additionally, with so many newer, energy-efficient models available that help to save on energy and money, it may be worth it in the long-run to upgrade your overall system.
2. The Extent of Repairs Needed and Cost
There is a huge range in costs when it comes to what repairs are needed to your HVAC system. Is it a simple fix, such as broken ductwork or a much larger expense, such as the blower’s motor went out? Similar to a car, a good rule of thumb is if the repair costs more than 50% of what the unit costs, it may be a good idea to explore installing a new system to avoid other repairs that may pop-up over time. Another key consideration is to double-check your unit’s warranty, and if you recently moved, you may have an existing home warranty as well.
3. Frequency of Repairs Needed
With the appropriate unit installed for your home’s size and needs, you should not need repairs every year. In fact, it should be a rarity. However, it’s expected you will need a repair or two over the unit’s lifespan. If your system is needing a repair every year or is needing major repairs more than a few times, it may be time to start preparing yourself for a needing a new system.
